Of Sculptures and their Creators ~ Artist Spotlight

By Hope

Summer in Nkwashi has been interesting. .

Watching the sculptures come to be has been one of my many highlights of the AIR program. To see what started out as just a frame; empty, hollow, a canvas in its own right waiting to become a story.

And today's artist highlight is Kingsley;

Between the sounds of the birds, the rippling water, insects navigating through the grass, I could always hear Kingsley Kapobe working on Dum Dums and Panther

Watching him mould concrete and wield metal has been nothing short of amazing. They way in which he has been intentional about his sculptures, making sure they’re balanced so they don’t tip over. The attention to detail is also phenomenal.

Kingsley started his journey in 1996 working with ceramics and has since ventured into painting and sculpting, working with wood and stone.

As you take in the art of Nkwashi, you will see a number of sculptures done by Kingsley.

He is inspired to create by nature, how sometimes a tree stump could be mistaken for a person in its stillness, until the leaves dance to rhythm of the wind.
